Missoula, MT (04/22/2019): Vault Comics is thrilled to announce SERA AND THE ROYAL STARS, a stunning new fantasy epic comic book series written by Jon Tsuei (Run Love Kill), drawn by Audrey Mok (Archie, Josie & The Pussycats), colored by Raúl Angulo (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), lettered by Jim Campbell (Wasted Space), and designed by Tim Daniel.
Civil war rages in the Empire of Parsa, and famine has struck. As the seasons refuse to turn, Princess Sera receives a vision from the deity Mitra telling her to find the Royal Stars and restore them to the heavens. Despite her kingdom and her troops’ need of her command, Sera embarks on a quest to find the fallen stars—now trapped on earth—and save her people from dearth and death.
SERA AND THE ROYAL STARS #1 hits store shelves in July 2019.
ADRIAN WASSEL, VAULT’S EDITOR-IN-CHIEF, ON SERA AND THE ROYAL STARS:
“Sera and the Royal Stars is the kind of fantasy story we (and I do mean all of us—creators, editors, publishers, retailers) were told for years was too grand in scope to market in comics. Which, of course, was absolute nonsense. Saga alone obliterated that previously held misconception. And a little lesbian Viking comic I happen to love deeply—yes, Heathen—also did its part tearing down walls. But I think, following the success of those titles and others, the truth of the matter emerged: High fantasy, epics of all sorts, aren’t too grand for the medium. That’s absurd. They’re just really dang difficult to make well. Enter Sera and the Royal Stars, a high fantasy quest blending dozens of Asian mythologies that somehow made me feel like I was re-watching my favorite episodes of Avatar, while re-reading my favorite issues of Monstress, with a hero I cared about so deeply I was twelve again discovering a book (it was Bone for me then) that felt like it had existed forever, and would exist forever, whose characters were so rich I’d think of them as secret friends of mine right up until the day I keeled over.
So yeah, I took a long time getting to where I should have started: I love this series. I love this series so much that sometimes I forget it’s new—that the rest of the world hasn’t just been reading it and loving it for decades.”
VAULT VINTAGE VARIANT COVER
SERA AND THE ROYAL STARS #1 will receive a Vault Vintage variant cover honoring the work of Natasha Alterici and her smash-hit, YALSA nominated Vault Comic series, HEATHEN. The Vault Vintage cover is drawn by Nathan Gooden and designed by Tim Daniel.
“The striking issue #1 cover of Natasha Alterici’s Heathen, depicting Aydis poised in bold defiance, left an indelible mark upon readers, and helped Vault drive a stake into the ground (and heart) of comics,” says Tim Daniel, Vault’s VP of Design & Brand.
“The launch of Jon Tsuei & Audrey Mok’s Sera and the Royal Stars coincides with the return of Aydis. When Audrey’s art arrived in our offices, it was immediately clear that Sera would join the ranks of other powerful icons such as She Said Destroy’s Morrigan, Queen of Bad Dreams’ Inspector Daher, and of course Heathen’s Aydis.” says Daniel.
“A star is born, indeed.”
