“The universe is being torn apart and the MICRONAUTS are caught in the middle! They find themselves prisoners… er, guests… of the enigmatic FORCE COMMANDER, leader of the SPACE GLIDERS, who has a connection to Captain Oziron Rael-one that makes Rael a target for BARON KARZA and his ACROYEARS!”
Marvel’s Bill Mantlo & Michael Golden Micronaut series of the 1980’s was very beloved. So the challenge when revamping a toy property book is you have to appeal to the nostalgic fans, you can’t use any of the characters or concepts owned by the previous publisher and you have to appeal to a newer audience. So now that IDW’s Micronauts is three issues in does it continue to deliver? I’d have to say yes. We are still exploring the interactions between Oz (Pharoid), Phenolo-Phi (Space Glider) and Larissa (Orbital Defender). Acroyear plays the strong semi-silent Chewbacca role in the group while Microtron is a suitable robot side kick. So Cullen Bunn is doing an excellent job with the writing.
The issue is listed as being drawn by David Baldeon but the inside credits list Max Dunbar as the artist. Max has a very clean style that I think suits the book. He draws the regognizable characters in a way that they are indeed immediately recognizable. Colours by David Garcia-Cruz really makes the art pop.
As always, my rules of thumb are “do I remember what happened last issue” and “did this issue make me care about what happens next”. In both cases the answer is yes so we will keep Micronauts from IDW on the pull list at my Local Comic Shop.
