I love seeing successful independent comics. Does my heart good to know that in a market filled with less than stellar comics from the big publishers a unique and interesting comic can find it’s niche and flourish. Auric of The Great White North is just such a title.
I’m sure you have seen my review and coverage of the Auric series before. Davis Dewsbury and Andrew Thomas have used the Kickstarter funding formula for the past several issues and did so again with Auric #4. Pledges have been collected, the book is finished and off to the printer. To recap, Auric was originally created as a mascot and mini-comic to celebrate the Northern Ontario Expo in Timmins, Ontario. Auric’s origin starts back in 1912, in a small mining town in Northern Ontario, Canada where a mysterious gas was unleashed from within a deep gold mine. All the miners inside the ominous shaft are affected as well as the countless townsfolk as this gas escaped to the northern air, changing the course of history forever. This gas seems to transform those that are susceptible to strange, unusual and dangerous mythical beasts.
“Previously … Taurin Curtis, a face from Auric’s past, has resurfaced revealing he has discovered a way to control the cursed beats that have reemerged. While unveiling Silverhorn, a combat-trained Minotaur obedient to Curtis’ command, a captive snow monster escapes from a transfer trailer and runs amok downtown. In battle, before his townspeople and media,m a drugged Auric fails where Silverhorn succeeds. As public opinion of his capabilities sways, Auric goes to lick his wounds at the local tavern where we see his old teammates are not as close as they once were.”
This issue provides more backstory to the adventure through flashbacks and introduces the new character of Desbois. What can I say about the book that I haven’t before? A fun adventure tale that is very approachable and suitable for all ages. For those that are not getting the comic as part of their Kickstarter rewards the debut will be at the Oshawa Comic Con December 16th, 2017 or online at http://www.greatnorthcomics.com/
