FEATURING ZAHN, ANDERSON, WILLINGHAM, WAGNER & MORE,
FOR 90TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE ORIGINAL RADIO SERIES
Chicago, Il. — MOONSTONE BOOKS, publisher of classic and new pulp books, comics, and accessories is pleased to announce the Kickstarter for their newest anthology, THE GREEN HORNET AND KATO: DETROIT NOIR CITY, in time for the 90th anniversary of the original Radio Serial Broadcast. This will be similar to the KOLCHAK: THE NIGHTSTALKER 50th ANNIVERSARY ANTHOLOGY Moonstone very successfully funded two years ago. And like that stunning book, Green Hornet: Detroit Noir City will be packed with amazing author and artist talent!
The Green Hornet radio serial debuted on January 31st, 1936 on Detroit’s WXYZ; the same station that produced its companion show, THE LONE RANGER. Asked to write a modern series with a Lone Ranger-style character, George W. Trendle and Fran Striker created millionaire newspaper owner, Britt Reid, who finds a higher calling after his father is unjustly incarcerated. He disguises himself as a nefarious crime lord to catch the real bad guys, all the while pretending he’s just “taking out his competition.” Like the Lone Ranger, the Hornet doesn’t work alone. His partner, Hayashi Kato—a Japanese martial artist indebted to Britt—also plays two roles: one as Britt’s manservant and chauffeur, and the other the Hornet’s deadly muscle. The series, a huge success, spawned toys, movie serials, books, comics, and a 1966 TV series featuring Van Williams as Reid/The Green Hornet and introduced American audiences to the legendary Bruce Lee as Kato.
Moonstone has previously produced three very successful volumes of Green Hornet short stories, along with their current digest series, Moonstone Double Shot and Moonstone Triple Shot. For this anniversary anthology, they pulled out all the stops! Leading the fight is Timothy Zahn (Star Wars: Thrawn), Kevin J. Anderson (Star Wars, Dune), and Bill Willingham (Fables), with a glorious cover by Matt Wagner (Batman / Grendel). An alternate cover (and interior illos)drawn by Marvel: Noir artist, Dennis Calero. Joining the crusade are renowned and award-winning authors, such as Matthew Baugh, Keith DeCandido, Mary Fan, Michael Haspil, Megan Mackie, Kim May, Sumiko Saulson, and the late James A. Moore. Additionally, a conversation between Paul Jenkins (Marvel: Civil War) and Peter J. Wacks (Heroes, Veronica Mars), about the legacy of the Green Hornet, will serve as the introduction. Edited by bestselling editor David Boop (Straight Outta Tombstone, Permutations: A Well World Anthology), making it Boop’s third anthology for Moonstone.
The Kickstarter (launching January 31st, 2025 on the 89th anniversary) will feature as many power ups such as free e-books from some of the authors, an A.M.A. ZOOM session, a short story and/or manuscript critique, Tuckerizations, and more! Stretch goals include a bonus story from Zahn, art cards, and some surprises not to be missed. The landing page can be found here: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/greenhornet/green-hornet-noir
