The Daily Comic Book Coffee, number 97: Classic X-Men #37

The Daily Comic Book Coffee, number 97: “Was Not What Will Be” from Classic X-Men #37, penciled by Rick Leonardi, inked by Bob McLeod, written by Fabian Nicieza, lettered by Joe Rosen and colored by Mike Rockwitz, published by Marvel Comics in September 1989.

This back-up tale starring Dazzler is written by Fabian Nicieza, his first time contributing to an X-Men title. After a Friday night concert in NYC, Allison Blair skates over to the Nighthawk Diner in the West Village for her weekly meet-up with a trio of “fellow insomniacs” who spend the entire night drinking coffee and talking politics, art & culture.

Rick Leonardi is one of those artists whose work sort of freaked me out the first couple of times I saw it, but I soon came to appreciate his idiosyncratic style. He does good work on this story of a caffeinated quartet chattering away until the wee hours of the morning in a Manhattan greasy spoon. Inking is by Bob McLeod, who provides Leonardi work with a slick, polished finish.
