rong>Lucky Comics #3
Edited by
John Michael Helmer
I just finished reading Lucky Comics #3 edited by John Michael Helmer. Each issue contains 3 8 page stories written and drawn by some very talented creators.
The first story with Beetle Girl, created by John Michael Helmer, who also did the letters. Words by Lloyd Smith, art by Eric Douthitt and editors Mark F. Davis and M. Waggoner. “Riddles Of The Sphinx!” was originally presented in: Beetle Girl #3 August, 2016. The original Blue Beetle appears in two panels, the second is a full page panel in which the original Sphinx appears. I’ve become a fan of Beetle Girl along with the art and writing. The writing and the art is very well done for such a short story. What I like, although the story is completed in only 8 pages, you can easily see that there can be more of the Sphinx in later stories.
“Red Rocket’s Glare,” John Helmer-writer/letters, Eric Douthitt-pencils, Jim Gullett-inks and Michael Waggoner-editor, originally presented in: Red Rocket #1 September, 2021 is the story of the Golden Age hero Red Rocket in the present-day. Rod, The Red Rocket, is a 94 year old senior in the Mitchell House For The Elderly. Rod is visited by a young looking Dave, The Blue Flame, a hero from the Golden Age. Red Rocket only appeared in a few stories of the 1940s, I think the same for the Blue Flame. From what I read of the Red Rocket stories, not much was shared of what he could do. I know even less about the Blue Flame. I enjoyed what I read in the short 8 page story and look forward to reading what will happen next.
The third story is “The Bolt & The Bomb,” originally presented in Blue Bolt #3 December, 2019, a Golden Age Blue Bolt story arc written by Lou Mougin, art by Eric Franklin, letters by John Michael Helmer and edited by Mike Waggoner. Lou Mougin is a fantastic writer who is known for doing intensive research on each character he writes. As mentioned before, I’ve known Lou for over 20 years online and enjoy everything he has written. He has taken an unknown, to me, Golden Age hero and made him interesting. Eric Franklin, has done an excellent job in the Golden Age style. I look forward to seeing more of his work.
The Lucky Comics anthologies is doing a great job of of collecting three stories in each issue from the over 200 stories in their publishing company. I plan on buying all the issues available in the series, along with any other issues I can buy. Check out their comics on Amazon, IndyPlanet and
