“Stars in the Trash” is a fun, bite-sized experience that takes players through classic animation’s nostalgia and magic. This is a 2-hour long game from start to finish, taking players through a cat’s journey through the real world in a big, busy city. This traditionally hand-drawn catventure is one you want to explore, especially when a day calls for a cozy game.
Created by the indie game studio Valhalla Cats, Stars in the Trash is a heartfelt journey exploring friendship, love, and belonging themes. This engaging tale is brought to life with stunning hand-drawn watercolor that showcases the passion and dedication behind its creation. The game offers a gentle-paced adventure narrative featuring an unlikely duo—a cat named Moka and a dog named Trasto —battling evil rats and a not-so-friendly kennelman.
The game features little platform puzzles while you navigate your day outside in the big real world. The character designs and art style are vintage and cute. An easy favorite element is classic cartoon comedy. The music gives this game a very whimsical Disney 90s cartoon animation vibe. There is no dialogue or voices, only good cartoon fun. We can all appreciate some funny cat sillies thrown in there, too.
Verdict
“Stars in the Trash” is more than just an adorable, fun side scroller with platform mechanics and puzzles. It is a story about Moka that invites you to fight the urge to knock over pots of flowers and bricks, scratch up cardboard, and make your mark at any opportunity possible. The connection between Moka and Trasto is purrfectly delightful, reminding me of Disney’s “Oliver & Company.”
Overall, this game was a wonderful experience that took me on a nostalgic journey.
“Stars in the Trash” is available now on Steam with a Nintendo Switch version in development with a date pending.
