TODD McFARLANE’S ICONIC SPAWN–MOBILE UP FOR AUCTION ON WHATNOT!
[Phoenix, AZ] – [04/10/24] – Todd McFarlane, creator of Spawn, co-founder of Image Comics, and founder of McFarlane Toys, will be returning to Whatnot on April 12th to auction off his iconic SPAWN-MOBILE FUNNY CAR! Originally created in 1992 as a promotional visual piece for Todd’s convention appearances, the Funny Car has garnered widespread attention for its distinctive design and history.
Featured in commercials during the early 90s, the car’s overall design includes many Spawn-Inspired details, such as a steering wheel adorned with Spawn styled spikes, a seat fashioned after Dracula’s coffin, and skeletal etching on its windows. However, it’s the two-sided paint job that truly captivates, with one side black with flames and the other white with bright red blood splatters, both adorned with different renditions of the classic Spawn comic book logo.
In 1994, the car was turned into a Mattel Hot Wheels. That diecast toy holds the distinction of being the first-ever Hot Wheels to utilize four-color printing on the body and featured a window on the back of the packaging, offering collectors a chance to see both sides of the car’s paint design. This Hot Wheels Funny Car (meaning the fiberglass body can be lifted off the frame), has since become a symbol of McFarlane’screative ingenuity and imagination.
The Spawn-Mobile Auction will be taking place during WhatnotCon, a virtual event bringing together over 1,300 sellers and special guests across various categories such as Comics, Action Figures, Video Games, and more. In addition to the auction, original Hot-Wheels Spawn–Mobiles will be available for purchase during the live event, along with a limited-edition commemorative poster signed by Todd himself.
