The Heavy Metal family has lost one of its own — Richard Corben, whose “Den” was the first story in the first issue, way back in April 1977. Corben’s death at 80 was announced this morning on social media by his wife Dona. Corben was a rock, a mainstay of Heavy Metal, who contributed stories in the ’70s, ’80s, ’90s, and returned in 2018 with the 15-part serial “Murky World.”
Corben had an instantly recognizable style of art that nobody could ever duplicate; nobody even tries. Corben was just Corben, possessed of a crazy talent that made for some of the most stunning comics Heavy Metal — or anyone — ever published. We will miss him very much.
