Comments: “Prologue: The Immigrants” We get a look at Will Eisner’s parents, who were loving and worked hard. He also had a younger brother.
“1. Billy” Billy is showing talent as an artist at a young age.
The family does have trouble meeting ends. The father does not want to give up his artistic dreams. Even at the cost it entails to his family.
Billy starts reading a lot with the classics first and tthen thepulps. He learns to draw as well. Also, he learns that making a living for his father is hard.
“2. Young Will” Will starts doing some drawings for a high school paper. Will is focused here on being an illustrator and he has the drive to suceed. At the expense of other things though.
“3. The Freelancer” Will does get a job drawing for a newspaper, yet he is not happy with it as it does not challenge his creativity. When Will drew his first published cartoon, the artwork brought out how proud he is.
We get to witness the birth of the Comic Book. This is a thrilling milestone.
“4. The Businessman” Will along with his friend Jerry start a comic book company. Will’s excitement comes out. His and Jerry’s work well together. Will shows confidence and he is knowledgeable on how to get things done. We see here the birth of Superman in comics and Will making a mistake.
“5. Wonder Man!” Wonder Man is a short lived version of Superman. Will puts his morals on hold here and this bothers him. Here we see comics really start to take off including superheroes.
“6. The Spirit” Will gets his chance to hit it big and he is feeling it. He is also being creative and his first syndictive strip is something different. Will has lifwill e make a change in his life as he gets called to serve.
“7. Man of the World” It is lovely as Will and Ann find romance. The love they share comes out loud and clear in these pages. Will also suffers a terrible loss here and you can see he is keeping a lot of his feeling internally.
“8. The Artist” Will creates A Contract with God. This is a work of love.
The art fits the period. The characters’ personalities are brought to life through the art.
Will Eisner is presented as a man who loves comics. You will feel that love through him.
