SUMMARY: Stingray’s low-level supervillain career seems to be going fine until he crosses paths with the most subtly sacrilegious superhero ever created, THE SINISTER SAINT! Sinners shiver at the sight of his savage stigmata!

COMMENTS: Let me start off by saying that though this is listed as issue 1, it’s actually issue 5. I hadn’t known that going in, but reading the first four issues isn’t necessary. The Amoral Stingray tells the story of Duncan, a low-level teenage supervillain known as Stingray. In this issue, he encounters the Sinister Saint, a parody of gritty dark ’90s heroes, chiefly Spawn and Ghost Rider. The story itself is a send-up of Silver Age Spider-Man, with Duncan navigating his personal life and supervillain antics, including his grandma, who, much like Aunt May, has a never-ending list of ailments. There’s some heavy-handed social commentary, but that seems very much by design. The book also includes quite a few ads, both real and parodic, and features little notes before them saying “continued after the next page,” which really adds to the faux Silver Age feel. In conclusion, I loved this book and look forward to going back and reading the first four issues.
