For this week’s installment, I’ll take a look at What If ….? # 41 from the second volume in which The Avengers, not The Fantastic Fout fought Galactus when he first arrived on earth.
The story kicks off with The Watcher explaining that The Fantastic Four had died upon coming back to earth, Namor was still wandering around as a drifter, and Captain America was still frozen in ice but The formation of The Avengers still occurred in this reality as well as the coming of Galactus but since there was no Fantastic Four, it was up to Earth’s Mightiest Heroes to stop Galactus from devouring the earth; The action in this issue never let up as one by one, every Avenger did their best to combat both Galactus and The Silver Surfer but ended up coming up short, and while I felt that the original Galactus trilogy had tons of heart and the emotional beats to make that a modern-day classic, this new version relied heavily on the action aspects to make the story more enjoyable to the readers; Even with the surprising intervention of The Watcher facing off against Galactus, I can definitely see that Valentino was going for more the more powerful elements just so this story can flow more naturally.
“What If The Avengers Had Fought Galactus” succeeds in acting as a love letter to The Silver Age, but I felt as if Valentino should have brought in some form of emotional aspect if he wanted to make this feel like a story that Stan Lee would have written. Nonetheless, I still feel that’s it’s a great story for any Marvel fan that wants a story they can enjoy all while asking themselves …..What If?!
Next week, I’ll take a look at an issue of ‘What If…?” from the first volume (Since I spent so much time on the second volume); Thanks for sticking around, and I will see you all next time.
