This week, I will review “Universal Monsters: The Mummy #1” from Skybound/Image Comics, the latest series in Skybound’s relaunch of the classic Universal Monsters line. Set in the early 1920s, Helen Grosvenor is a woman caught between two worlds but belonging to neither, forever haunted by a childhood encounter steeped in curse. When mysterious voices beckon her back to an Egyptian dig site from her past, Helen unwittingly takes on an unexpected role in the rise of a monster known only as THE MUMMY!
Right from the start, Faith Erin Hicks works wonders in revitalizing classic characters such as The Mummy in a way that feels fresh, steering clear of heavy reliance on the source material from the 1940s to introduce readers to this iconic monster. Instead, she presents a new interpretation that invites both new and returning readers with a modern twist. The focus on Helen Grosvenor and her desire to escape her parents’ rigid expectations to enjoy time with her friends adds a much-needed human element that is often missing in monster stories. Hicks skillfully weaves in the right components to make Helen, her family, and friends feel vibrant, giving them rich personality traits that endear them to readers. Additionally, I must emphasize the fascinating psychological depth Hicks develops within Helen, which will be explored further when she confronts the Mummy. This intriguing aspect adds a novel plot point that sets this series apart from others in the Universal Monsters line. Faith Erin Hicks boldly ventures outside her comfort zone in storytelling to craft a chilling epic that not only reintroduces The Mummy to horror enthusiasts but also showcases how Skybound Entertainment is successfully revitalizing the Universal Monsters for a contemporary audience.
Well, that’s it for me this week. Thanks for sticking around, and I look forward to seeing you all next time.
