Since this week is the season finale of Disney+’s Ms. Marvel, I feel like it’s only appropriate to take a look at The Magnificent Ms. Marvel # 18, the grand finale to Saladin Ahmed and Minkyu Jung’s run and the series as a whole.
Kamala and her friends gather at the Coles Academy homecoming dance but as usual (And this sort of thing ALWAYS happened in the Marvel Universe) something comes along and puts a damper on what suppose to be a fun event as Stormranger, Kamala’s Kree nanosuit who gained sentience, returns which results in an all-out melee that almost became disastrous when Amulet (Along with some of Kamala’s friends) came to her side to help combat the villainous Stormranger. This issue really pulled out all the stops when it came to giving this story a proper conclusion as all of Kamala’s supporting cast is left in a good place, courtesy of Saladin Ahmed’s wonderful yet compelling characterization. The Kamala/Stormranger battle really gave this issue the gravitas that kept it from being disinteresting all while giving the readers some closure so that the past eighteen issues of this run can serve as a great body of work as well as another intriguing entry in the life of Kamala Khan.
Yes, The Kamala/Stormranger aspects feel like a modern-day version of the Spider-Man/Venom saga but with Ahmed and Jung at the helm, it felt like its own story without relying so heavily on Spider-Man history to move the narrative ahead. This issue was a perfect send-off for Kamala’s other solo series and only time will tell if Marvel wants to give her a new series. The thing is, the new series would need an ever stronger creative team thanks to the world-building that Ahmed and Jung perfected on The Magnificent Ms.Marvel.
And that concludes my tour of Ms. Marvel review. Next week I’ll kick off a new post with a look at some various Tim Sale issues so be on the lookout for that. Thanks for sticking around and I will see you all next time.
