This week, I will examine “Rick and Morty: New Year, New Rick Special #1” from Oni Press.
Rick Sanchez, an eternal a**hole and pompous egomaniac, has made a New Year’s resolution to… be nice. But without Rick’s jerkiness to keep it at bay, the Cosmic Code Authority is godlike and determined to make the universe as family-friendly as possible, censoring all of reality! It’s up to Rick to save the day (again), but it’ll come at the cost of abandoning his New Year’s resolution. This special manages to pack in many WTF moments to bring out the laughs as well as juggling many subplots such as Rick’s pilot called “The Last Alpha” (a romantic but bizarre werewolf saga that makes the “Twilight” franchise such an Oscar-worthy epic) and Beth “encouraging” Jerry to follow up on his new year’s resolution by getting into a fight (something he later regrets) highlights why this special never scrimps on the outrageous aspects that make the comics and the show so humourous while once again showing how Jerry finds himself in these wild predicaments, but the real bright element within this special is the characterization of Rick being nice which is something that no R&M fan has witness. Still, Christof Bogacs’s writing does wonders in not overdoing the concept, while the core traits that make Rick such an interesting individual are still intact. Just like the numerous spin-offs that came before this, this special continues the trend of being wild and unpredictable, which many R&M fans will be in pure ecstasy when reading this, but let’s hope no one in Hollywood will make a live-action version of “The Last Alpha”
Well, that’s it for me this week. Thanks for sticking around and I look forward to seeing you all next time.
