Now that 2023 is here I’ll kick things off by looking at a comic chocked full of comedy- Krusty The Clown # 1 from Bongo Comics.
This one-shot gives us two stories with the main story sees Springfield’s resident funnyman wandering the empty streets of the town (On his birthday). Along the way, Krusty starts to reflect on his past, one that includes him working as a substitute teacher (And having to match wits with a young Homer Simpson), starting up his Krusty Burger franchise, and staring in shows that parody “As The World Turns” and “Happy Days” during the early days of Krustylu Studios. Krusty then finds that the town has a birthday surprise for him, only he’s entirely shocked by it (**NO SPOILERS**); The backup feature sees Krusty unveiling some new items at Krusty Burger -A triple-bypass burger, a soda that’s 100% sugar and liquid-free (Whaaat?!?) and super salty fries. it’s only when he tastes the fries and takes a sip of that soda that Krusty goes on a weird hallucination trip.
This issue is a wonderful way of giving Krusty the spotlight that didn’t require The Simpsons themselves to be involved which I found to be a delight. Yes, I felt that both stories were moving at a fast pace but they still delivered on the comedy aspect that I feel all Simpsons fans will enjoy. Krusty The Clown is that one rare comedian that enjoys slapping his face on any product he intends to sell while finding humor in seeing someone get hurt (Sideshow Mel slipping on a banana peel and possibly breaking his neck is hilarious to Krusty); It’s also funny to see the more unhealthy side of eating at Krusty Burger (It makes McDonald’s look like Applebees); This was a great behind-the-scenes story that shows how much everyone in Springfield loves Krusty and while his material may be outdated for the most part, his celebrity status remains intact for better or worse…and that alone is enough to find the humor in that.
Well, that’s it for me this week. Thanks for sticking around and I will see you all next time.
