This week I will take a look at “Jill And The Killers # 1” from Omi Press. It’s “The First 48” meets “Veronica Mars” to get anyone prepared for a series such as this one.
Returning to school after the disappearance of her mother, teenager Jill Estrada can’t wait for things to return to normal even as her friends become compulsively obsessed with Box Killers. In this true-crime subscription game, each month’s “unsolved case” is custom-tailored to the life of its player. There’s only one catch: Jill’s game seems to be all too real but when her clues connect to a series of disappearances in her town, Jill and her friends must uncover the truth behind these mysterious crimes before one of their own becomes the next victim.
This issue does the most with the mystery-solving aspect as we see the main characters doing their best to decipher the clues from their kit but the main hook is Jill herself as she finds herself continuing to come to terms with her mother’s disappearance makes her more compelling and at the same time making sure that no one has to go through the same ordeal she did by solving these crimes; The team of writer Olivia Cuartero-Briggs and artist Roberta Ingranata crafted a story full of intrigue and mystery that adds a solid amount of realism that makes this appealing to anyone who like seeing a mystery being played. While the story drags on at times (The first issue clocks in at 55 pages) it makes for a great read while showing that 2024 could be a great year for Oni Press.
Well, that’s it for me this week. Thanks for sticking around and I will see you all next time.
