This week, I will look at “Ice Cream Man #43,” a star-studded event that presents a unique challenge for this anthology series: to create a comic horror story that’s only one page long.
With such A-list talents as Grant Morrison, Jeff Lemire, Geoff Johns, Matt Fraction, Kelly Sue DeConnick, Patton Oswalt, Zoe Thorogood, and Deniz Camp contributing, the results are magnificent. They bring their distinct styles and tones to the one-page stories, adding layers of horror and suspense to the ICM mythology while adhering to the narrative established by W. Maxwell Prince. This issue is undoubtedly a masterclass in storytelling that never compromises on quality, delivering tales that not only frighten readers but also provoke contemplation about the everyday aspects of life, revealing how anything ordinary can take on a horrifying dimension. Ice Cream Man never disappoints, and this issue raises the stakes when it comes to exhibiting horror at its best. Here’s hoping it won’t be long before we see a sequel, as an experiment like this shouldn’t be one-and-done. We should appreciate this issue for the talented contributors and their dedication to maintaining a top-tier anthology series.
Well, that’s it for me this week. Thanks for sticking around, and I look forward to seeing you all next time.
