This week, I will examine “G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero- Jinx # 1, “ a one-shot from the “Silent Missions” line that pays homage to “The Silent Interlude” in G.I. Joe # 21 from 1983.
In this standalone silent issue, the chart-topping team of Dani (Arkham City: The Order of the World) and Dan Watters (Destro) places the iconic G.I. Joe ninja, Jinx, in the most dangerous mission of her life. She has 20 seconds of real-time action to escape a Cobra base on a treacherous snowy mountain. The story’s fast-paced action, combined with its dialogue-less tone, highlights the talents of both Dani and Watters as they put Jinx through the wringer, thanks in part to the violence throughout this issue. The suspense keeps readers on their toes as the clock ticks away. Dani’s artwork provides a dark contrast reminiscent of early Frank Miller while presenting his style in a way that stands out. Despite the absence of dialogue, Dani and Watters emerge as a strong writing team, maximizing this situation with impressive results. While nothing can match the epic storytelling of G.I. Joe # 21, this entry does not bring anything new to that concept but remains an exciting and explosive addition to the G.I. Joe franchise that can not be missed.
Well, that’s it for me this week. Thanks for sticking around, and I look forward to seeing you next time.
