Halloween’s a few days away, and it’s only fitting that I look at the misadventures of the reigning Queen of Halloween herself- Elvira! So this week I’ll look at “Elvira: Mistress of The Dark # 1” from Dynamite Entertainment in which Elvira finds herself going on a journey thought horror history in this miniseries that’s sure to attract the most hardcore Elvira fan.
The story starts off with Elvira filming a scene for an upcoming movie (Another campy horror movie) but when she heads back to her trailer, she is suddenly thrown in a casket that transports her to the night when Lord Bryon, Percy, and Mary Shelley (Yeah, Mary “Frankenstein” Shelley) set out to write the best horror story but the intensity of the story gets amped up when Elvira and the three authors are stalked by a medieval sorcerer in search of a bride that escalates in a chase that ends up seeing the sorcerer getting his comeuppance. I really like how this series still has all the elements that people love about an Elvira story- It’s both silly and campy, but along with the self-awareness and quips it’s still an Elvira story that manages to keep everything lighthearted but maintains the horror atmosphere with perfection.
Dave Acosta’s art brings an animated feel to it but from the looks of it, the way he visualizes Elvira will win the hearts of many guys out there seeing as how the cheesecake factor is in full effect whenever the Mistress of the Dark is concerned.
This series is everything an Elvira story should be. I would also recommend that you would read this series with an open mind and embrace the time-traveling concept because it doesn’t hinder the series but instead gives it a sense of awe while reminding us that Elvira is, and always will be, The Mistress of the Dark. Happy Halloween.
Well, that’s it for me this week. I’ll be back next week with a new review so thanks for sticking around and I will see you all next time.
