This week, I look at “Dread The Halls,” the latest offering from Image Comics through Syzygy Publishing. A collection of horror tales to read curled up by the light of the Yule log! Long before Americans celebrated horror on Halloween, the Victorians gathered around a fireplace on Christmas Eve. Dread the Halls honors this macabre tradition by wishing you and yours “Happy Holidays” with stories of ghosts, ghastly abominations, and vile creatures.

Christmas is a time of joy and goodwill, these stories, however, will shatter those holiday troupes with a tremendous ounce of terror that will make anyone see it in a new yet frightening light, especially when Santa Claus, Gingerbread Men, and Christmas Carolers get such a gruesome treatment. The stories presented in this one-shot have plenty of substance that never feels rushed when it comes to displaying the eerie elements, they also manage to leave a lasting impression that no one will forget because some anthologies may choose style over quality storytelling, but with this one, it takes the spirit of EC Comics and gives a creative spin that horror fans will enjoy but it also great to know that Halloween and Christmas and blend with perfect ease without the character Krampus being overused to no end. Thanks to the amazing display of writing and art in this one-shot, anthologies such as this one will never be obsolete, and if anyone picks this up, be sure not to read this on Christmas Eve under a lit tree with the lights off.

Well, that’s it for me this week. Thanks for sticking around and I look forward to seeing you next time.
