With Halloween just a day, I will look at “Damaged People” from Alien Books. In the first issue, we learn the story of Abigail, a boring and lonely girl who spends her days scaring people until his life changes completely when he meets Mary, a ghost girl. It is a gothic romance in the 90s, with dark places, flowers, and two damaged people. In many ways, Damian Connelly captures the essence of the Vertigo line with such precision that this is a story that leaves anyone pondering about the existence of ghosts in a way that could have anyone in disbelief or hoping that they are around us. The eerie narrative within this story works in giving us a full scope of Abigail’s interactions with Mary that helps the readers embrace their bizarre friendship while exploring the themes of grief and loneliness in a way that never feels cheap nor repetitive; Connelly, however, thrives in fleshing out the psychological overtones of his story that brings a sophisticated feel to it that sets in apart from any of the horrors stories that came before or freshing up the concept of anyone seeking comfort in the form of a ghost. This story delights in many ways, such as the Goth elements and the issue of finding inner peace no matter how hard it is, this is by far a great story that anyone can indulge in if they want some suspense in their horror stories without the blood and gore. A flawless character study that will stand out as this series progresses and with Connelly channeling the likes of Neil Gaiman, Grant Morrison, and Peter Milligan to great effect, Damaged People is a series worth looking out for.

Well, that’s it for me. Thanks for sticking around and I look forward to seeing you next time.
