This week I will look at Convert #1, the latest sci-fi series from Image Comics that finds Science Officer Orrin Kutela stranded on a distant planet, starving and haunted by the ghosts of his dead crew. Right away, Convert has all the right elements in a typical Sci-fi series but what singles this one out from the other batch of comics or T.V./Movies that have adapted this premise is that writer John Arcudi goes for a more personal effect in crafting a story such as this one because he really gets into Orrin’s inner turmoil with him being stranded along with the survival instincts that he puts to use so that he can make sense of his surroundings. The minor flashbacks within the issue help in establishing Orrin’s situation so that the readers know what’s happening within each page and to his credit, Arcudi, succeeds in bringing a real emotional touch to this series that feels different from anything one would see in a Sci-fi series which i feel is heading in the right direction.

As for the artwork, Savannah Finley brings a rugged Frank Frazetta tone to this opening issue that blends perfectly with Arcudi’s script along with the fact that this story flows easily to where you will be shocked by the last page (**NO SPOILERS**) is truly amazing. Convert # 1 breaks the norm from any typical Sci-Fi story by blending it with some fantasy elements while adding a touch of humanity that will be looked upon fondly.

Well, that’s it for me this week. Thanks for sticking around and I will see you all next time.
