This week, I will examine issue one of “In Bloom” from BOOM Studios.
The concept features a cell in the body called the BLOOM that changed humanity forever and was transformed by symbiotic fungal megasystems that infected their bodies. Some affected people as they grew new body parts, and some found their personalities changed radically. The story itself takes a very straightforward approach to introducing the BLOOM and the strange transformations on display; The uniqueness of this series is attractive enough to keep readers engaged due to the blending of sci-fi and noir. However, it feels more like a modern-day reboot of “Soylent Green” along with rehashing some bits from “Blade Runner”…. just with plants, so it’s an interesting way to push the boundaries of sci-fi to the limit, it does, however, take away from the originality, which I have to say is a true shame since it’s an unreal take on plants and the human body that’s never been seen before. The real takeaway from this series is that its concept will grow stale after the second issue because it works better as a graphic novel rather than a limited series. The creative team has plenty of talent that shines in the writing and artwork; With that said, this series should be approached with caution mainly because it’s such an acquired taste, and at the same time, it will make anyone not want to own a plant or even think about buying one, for that matter.
Well, that’s it for me this week. Thanks for sticking around and I look forward to seeing you next time.
