This week, I reviewed “Blood Train #1” from Image Comics/Ninth Circle. After backpacking through Asia, a group of friends boards the Siberian Express to begin their journey home. Little do they know, they’ve purchased a one-way ticket to hell, as one of them has been infected with a bioweapon that will transform them into a monster, slaughtering everyone on the train. If the bioweapon reaches its destination in Europe, it will start World War Three. Now, these friends must face a difficult choice: kill someone they love to save the world or die trying.

This one-shot delivers plenty of action and intense moments that keep the tension high. While the pacing moves at a brisk rate, the story itself is never lacking in originality, nor does it rely on stereotypical caricatures often found in horror movies. This one-shot captures the same energy that “Train to Busan” had upon release, using a similar premise, but “Blood Train” shines by focusing on a small group of characters rather than juggling many, which brings the story to life. I give Adam Glass and Andrew Daab much credit for crafting this exceptional horror tale. Bernard Chang may be known for his superhero work, but his artwork evokes horrific yet brutal elements that will terrify readers while enhancing the plot threads laid out by Glass and Daab. “Blood Train” might seem like another attempt to replicate “Train to Busan” with certain elements borrowed from “28 Days Later,” but it stands as a compelling entry in horror, and it does so without featuring zombies.

Well, that’s it for me this week. Thanks for sticking around, and I look forward to seeing you all next time.
