REVIEW CORNER: BEAR PIRATE VIKING QUEEN # 1

BEAR PIRATE VIKING QUEEN # 1 (2024)
Writer: Sean Lewis
Artist/Letterer: Jonathan Marks Barravecchia

This week I will look at “BEAR PIRATE VIKING QUEEN # 1” from Image Comics, a new series that unveils a blood-splattered story of conquest, not to mention Bears, Pirates, Vikings, And Queens-all battling for their claim to determine what the world will become. This is an absolutely wild ride full of blood and violence that is an ode to both pirates and the sea but don’t expect this to be like a rated PG-13 Disney story because Sean Lewis (“King Spawn”) takes a concept like this and makes it worthwhile to where getting lost into this story is a good thing, especially when you take into account the sea poem-esque narrative from Captain Paul Reddish and the bear that he befriends, but things get really out of control with the appearance of a bizarre-looking Viking that will send chills up the readers’ spine; Reading this, I feel this is the type of book that gets to display Lewis’ range as a writer on a full scale that sees him taking the absurdity of this series to such creative heights while showing that he can do more than write Spawn stories; Jonathan Marks Barravecchia’s art reminds me of Bill Sienkiewicz mixed with Dave McKean that goes for a more abstract feel to it but you can’t keep your eyes off of it.
It’s sporadic for anyone to come across a series such as this one because it takes pride in its uniqueness to tell a story that initially seems out there. Still, once you get into it, it’s a prime example of the kind of stories that can be told in the ever-growing world of independent comics, especially Image Comics so prepare to be amazed by Bears & Pirates & Vikings & Queens….oh my!! (Sorry, I had to do it)

Well, that’s it for me this week. Thanks for sticking around. I will see you all next time.
