This week, I will examine “The Last Boy # 1” from BOOM Studios. Years after Peter Pan’s adventures with Wendy Darling, the boy who wouldn’t grow up is now the last one in Neverland, still clinging to his adventurous youth. Meanwhile, in London, Wendy also yearns for childhood and its freedom from responsibility as she struggles against the transition to adulthood and her family’s expectations. As their desires create a mirror of fantasy and reality, a disastrous encounter with the aging Captain Hook becomes the catalyst for Peter’s realization that Neverland is growing up without him. But will the two of them find each other again to continue their age-old adventures… or is this truly the final threshold of their adolescence?!
Watching Peter Pan navigate a changing world creates a captivating character study. However, Wendy struggles to escape a life she wants no part of. Despite the challenges Peter faces, such as her father’s illness, an overbearing mother, and the difficulty of getting her manuscript published, it is understandable for her to reminisce about her childhood. While her story occupies a few pages, it seems that Dan Panosian will revisit her arc when she eventually reconnects with Peter. Panosian injects a great deal of realism into this narrative, illustrating how some characters grapple with time and seek the strength to embrace it. This is especially effective for a symbolic character like Pan. Ultimately, it offers a refreshing perspective that avoids feeling like a rehash of the classic 1991 movie “Hook.” It also refrains from escalating the plot, or dialogue, or adding any elements of horror. Instead, it presents a Peter Pan story that anyone can relate to, further enriching the mythos of this public domain icon.
Well, that’s it for me. Thanks for sticking around, and I look forward to seeing you next time.
