Veteran DC Comics and Archie Comics writer and editor Paul Kupperberg (Superman, Supergirl, The Doom Patrol, Peacemaker, Vigilante, Life with Archie) announces the launch of the Kickstarter Campaign for his new Crazy 8 Press release, Direct Conversations: Talks With Fellow DC Comics Bronze Age Creators.
Direct Conversations is a collection of one-on-interviews with ten creators with whom Paul entered the comics business in the mid-1970s. “I focused on what was going on at DC during those years for Direct Conversations because it’s the place I knew best. I read Marvels, I had friends who worked there, but my fan loyalty and heart had always been with DC and their characters. It’s been my ambition since I was eight years old to someday write for DC.”
Included are conversations with: Writer/artist Howard V. Chaykin, writer/editor Jack C. Harris, writer/editor Tony Isabella, writer/editor/former DC president and publisher Paul Levitz, production artist/inker Steve Mitchell, writer/former DC production manager Bob Rozakis, artist Joe Staton, colorist Anthony Tollin, writer Bob Toomey, and writer/Batman film franchise producer Michael Uslan.
“We all come from different experiences and background, but one thing we shared was our desire to do comic books,” Kupperberg said. “And it didn’t matter which publisher you were working for, DC or Marvel, all of us co-existed in a relatively small orbit around the business, which was then largely centered in New York. Now, almost 50 years after meeting them, the business, and us, have kind of scattered, and even though I’ve kept in touch with most of these guys, we don’t usually get the chance to talk like this. The Kickstarter campaigns offers signed copies of Direct Conversations: Talks With Fellow DC Comics Bronze Age Creators paperback, either by itself or with a PDF e-copy, or in combination with signed copies of one, two, or all three of my previously published books about comics and PDF e-copies: Direct Comments: Comic Book Creators in their Own Words, Paul Kupperberg’s Illustrated Guide to Writing Comics, and I Never Write for the Money But I Always Turn in the Manuscript for a Check.
“I know backers have come to expect stretch goals and elaborate rewards in their Kickstarter campaigns,” Kupperberg said, “but from the amount of enthusiasm from people I’ve told about Direct Conversations, as well as from the reaction online, made me think I didn’t need a lot of frills to sell a book of conversations with Bronze Age creators about the history they’ve witnessed, or in a lot of cases, helped make.”
The 21-day Kickstarter campaign launches October 5, 2022 at 12 noon EDT.
