Mad Cave Studios steps up in Hurricane Helene Disaster Relief in Support of Comic Retailers and Independent Bookstores
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
OCT. 4, 2024, (PORTLAND, OR) — Mad Cave Studios, the independent publisher known for its dedication to storytelling and community, is proud to support the Book Industry Charitable Foundation (BINC) with a $10,000 donation to support comic and bookstore retailers impacted by Hurricane Helene. This donation will help provide immediate relief to retailers facing unforeseen financial and medical hardships caused by the disaster, which has devastated large parts of the Southeast.

As Hurricane Helene tore through Florida, Georgia, the Carolinas, and beyond, countless bookstores and comic shops were left damaged, without power, or facing other critical challenges. Communities like St. Petersburg, Asheville, and Black Mountain have seen their beloved shops close due to water damage and power outages, while others are fighting to recover amid widespread devastation.

The Book Industry Charitable (BINC) Foundation is a nonprofit dedicated to assisting booksellers, comic retailers, and store employees who are facing financial hardships. Since its inception in 1996, Binc has been a lifeline to independent bookstores and comic shops, providing financial support for various crises, including natural disasters, medical emergencies, and more. To date, Binc has supported over 10,000 families with more than $11 million in aid.

“Book People Caring for Book People”
BINC Foundation has been instrumental in helping these businesses rebuild, providing vital financial, medical, and mental health assistance. Stores like Sassafras on Sutton in North Carolina, which faces an extended closure due to water damage and missing infrastructure, have turned to BINC for support. Others, like Copperfish Books in Florida, are using their community ties to spread hope, while Blinking Owl Books in Fort Myers remains closed due to flooding.

“These businesses are at the heart of their communities, and many are struggling to recover from this disaster,” said Mark Londonof Mad Cave Studios. “We are honored to stand with Binc and offer our support to help them through this difficult time. We encourage others to contribute what they can to help rebuild and support these vital shops that bring stories to life.”
There are many ways to help. Whether as a bookseller, author, publisher, or someone who loves books, your contribution can make a difference.
