Self-published comics are a passion of mine. Seeing unique tales and new talents producing something for the pure love of comics is amazing. These indie creators almost always have day jobs, families and yet find the time, love and passion to produce a comic book.
Sometimes quality differs as we are seeing raw, unrefined talent. Jim Lee’s early work barely got him a notice at Marvel in the early days. But that doesn’t detract from the fun. On occasion, you find a comic of wonderful quality.
Shane Heron is a local Canadian artist that has worked on a few other projects such as Black Hole Hunters Club and is a mainstay at comic conventions. Recently Shane’s Kickstarter for his own creation, Morris, completed and the issues shipped. I received mine during a bit of a bad time for me personally but once I got a chance to sit down with the comic all the fond emotions I have for indie comics came flooding back in. This is why I haunt Artist Alley at comic conventions.
Morris #1 tells the tale of Morris, local Sheriff to the sleepy little Western town of Beatrice. Complete with saloon and sassy owner, Beatrice looks like every other town you would find in a cowboy book. But just on the outskirts of town lies a swamp, a swamp filled with lizard people. So right away your alarm bells are going off that this is not a typical Western.
Shane’s art is unique and easily identifiable as his own in Morris. A nice and clean look that suits the material immensely. There is a bit of roughness to the work but it is not distracting from the comic in any way. Shane has a few folks helping out with the colouring but both Jeffery Myles and Paris Alleyne compliment each other’s colour pallet and if it wasn’t for the credit page you would have a hard time noticing.
A fun book that is just begging for the next chapter. If you see Shane at a comic convention pick up Morris #1 or head over to his Facebook page and contact Shane about ordering a copy at https://www.facebook.com/shaneheronart/
