Batman: The Long Halloween- The Last Halloween # 1– Jeph Loeb returns to The Long Halloween saga for a new entry that will wrap it up and spin off into its own story thanks in part to Loeb’s writing as he picks up where he left off with such ease to where he once again captures the dark and moody essence of Gotham City and while Tim Sale is no longer here, it’s safe to say that Eduardo Risso has risen to the occasion with his art to where he’s not copying anything that Sale did but instead, honors him in his own way thanks to the attention to detail he adds in his artwork (DC should definitely hand the reins over to Risso instead of utilizing a rotating team of artists for this series); This issue works as the perfect counterpart to the original stories that will have readers wanting more and with Jeph Loeb back on Batman, who can blame them?!
Lobo: Cancellation Special # 1– The Main Man is BACK and in true form, as he recovers from a nasty hangover, he takes a job from a king of a distant planet to rescue his daughter from the clutches of a warlord known as “Murdercroth Slaughterface” (Yeah, the name takes getting used to); Right away, Kyle Starks presents tons of juvenile humor in his script to where he’s not giving readers the same old Lobo story they’re read over and over but instead bring something fresh and violent to the forefront because while he may not be Keith Giffen or Alan Grant, he is paying homage and respect with the levels of gore on every page and seeing Kyle Hotz on art duties is amazing because he brings his own style with such flair but does it in a way where, to his credit, he’s not trying to be the next Simon Bisley. This one-shot is big, bloody, and downright hilarious, with that said it’s safe to say that thanks to his appearances in the “House of Brainiac” crossover, as well as this one-shot, Lobo is definitely here to stay.
Masters of the Universe/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles of Grayskull # 1 – The TMNT AND THE MOTU in one big crossover is something that anyone from the 80s will enjoy immensely and with good cause! The story starts off with the Turtles in Eternia helping Man-At-Arms and the rest of He-Man’s allies due to Shredder and Krang striking an alliance with Skeletor. Still, with Writer Tim Seeley at the helm, he surprises the readers by adding some fun elements such as the Turtles getting an Eternia-style makeover and the action sequences being lively and exciting. Seeley is more than willing to step away from the familiar aspects of a crossover such as heroes fighting each other rather than joining forces to defeat the villains or invading another earth just for the sake of it, this crossover takes many turns which is good because it helps in bringing out the fun as well as making sure the readers are gearing up for a monumental adventure that will be remembered with fondness. 80s babies and pop culture fanatics will definitely get some thrills with a crossover such as this one thanks in part to the strong outing by its creative team.
Well, that’s it for me this week. Thanks for sticking around and I will see you all next time.
