Doom Academy #1 – The characters from “Strange Academy” find themselves attending a new school in Latveria, complete with a name change (because why not?). The students get a crash course in wizardry while acclimating to the colder yet no-nonsense atmosphere of the academy. However, the most captivating aspect of this series is the lighthearted chemistry among the characters, especially Scoop, the editor-in-chief of the Doom Academy Dispatch (You’ll be shocked to find out his father is **NO SPOILERS**), who is poised to be the title’s breakout character. Mackenzie Cadenhead effectively utilizes the academic setting to infuse her script with youthful energy, blending a Harry Potter vibe with an ‘80s sitcom flair that brings excitement to each page. It’s always a pleasure to see Pasqual Ferry’s work on the interiors, thanks to the vibrant elements he contributes while ensuring Cadenhead’s script shines on all levels. Deeply rooted in the “One World Under Doom” event, Doom Academy emerges as the more enjoyable title from this crossover, offering the “Strange Academy” characters a substantial platform for growth, making this series every fan of mystical teens causing chaos at a Latverian school should prioritize.

Stranger Things and Dungeons & Dragons: The Rise of Hellfire #1 – This D&D prequel showcases Eddie Munson’s ascent as the de facto leader of the Hellfire Club while celebrating the enduring love that any teenager has for D&D (It was the eighties). However, once you dig into the details of this issue, it feels rather flat, lacking anything particularly exciting, and it suffers from a rapid pace that exacerbates the issue. Nevertheless, the charm within this installment certainly compensates for it. Fans of Stranger Things will appreciate this series for what it is—especially those invested in season 4—so it seems that the next issue promises to be more of a game-changer. Even with its flaws, this issue remains an exceptional read that should not be overlooked.

Weapon X-Men #1 – Wolverine, Chamber, Cable, Thunderbird, and Deadpool join forces for what could be the most extreme and dysfunctional X-team yet as they embark on a rescue mission that goes awry. Under the guidance of Joe Casey and ChrisCross, this X-title successfully showcases intense action and humor in a way that has been missed for a while. While the premise does not introduce anything novel, it boasts a larger-than-life quality that makes it distinct and feels like a throwback to the ‘90s. There’s no doubt that the story will gain momentum in the following issue, but Casey and ChrisCross have delivered a series that shouldn’t be missed, emphasizing that it’s a great time to be an X-Men fan.

Well, that’s it for me this week. Thanks for sticking around, and I look forward to seeing you all next time.
