Absolute Wonder Woman #4 – The latest issue of AWW brings awe and tenderness into the mix by introducing Etta Candy and her sister, Gia, establishing them as faithful allies to Diana. Still, Kelly Thompson gives both Etta and Gia a chance to shine while providing a fresh take on their characterizations, and fans of this series will be amazed by how Diana regains her arm (Definitely a ‘WOW’ moment). The action and magic are top-notch, and the unforgettable moments throughout this issue showcase what a great series Absolute Wonder Woman is, already making a case to be the best comic book series of 2025.
Doctor Doom & Rocket Raccoon #1 – Doctor Doom and Rocket Raccoon may seem like an unlikely pairing in comics. Still, under the direction of J. Michael Straczynski, it comes off as a hilarious buddy comedy that keeps you intrigued with every page. You can’t help but laugh at the back-and-forth banter between Doom and Rocket while they explore their quest to return before time, which keeps this one-shot from drifting off the rails with jokes. The fourth-wall-breaking and editor notes provide a nice touch that highlights JMS’s knack for humor. Although some aspects may feel dragged out to reach the main premise, it’s a fun romp that entertains on all levels, while also being an interesting character study for Doctor Doom that’s both terrifying and fascinating. It leaves us wanting a second helping.
Superman #22 – Joshua Williamson is on a hot streak with this title, thanks to his sharp reinvention of Doomsday and his mythology that strengthens the character so he’s no longer viewed as an overused villain whose claim to fame is that he “killed” Superman. Another wonderful factor for this series is the strong dynamic between Clark and Lois in her role as Superwoman, giving their relationship a much stronger foundation that’s delightful all around. The return of The Radiant (who once defeated Doomsday before he arrived on Earth), along with a rather unexpected but action-packed Superman/Doomsday team-up, are concepts executed to perfection. Superman is truly making a gigantic effort to be one of DC’s strongest titles, and in this new era presented by Williamson, Dan Mora, Alejandro Sanchez, and Ariana Maher, this is by far the best period for The Man of Steel, blending classic elements with a modern twist to excellent results.
Ultimate Spider-Man #13 – Peter Parker and Harry Osborn being held captive by the Sinister Six may sound like a story that’s been told time and again, but with Jonathan Hickman’s perfect storytelling and remixing of Spider-Man canon, he manages to put a marvelous and fresh spin on it that elevates the high-stakes drama and dire situation both Peter and Harry find themselves in, keeping readers on the edge of their seats due to the twists and turns. We also glimpse a new Spider-Man swinging around NYC. Although it may seem strange, it gets explained within the first few pages (**NO SPOILERS**) and makes for a fantastic entry in this issue. Another standout issue offering great homages to legendary elements such as the black suit and the alien symbiote, but make no mistake, this series’ hot streak will never die down and continues to be a must-read for anyone who enjoys the new Ultimate line.
Uncanny X-Men #9 – This issue of “Uncanny X-Men” is a great way to get back on track with The Outliers taking center stage as they find themselves hunted by a pack of bloodthirsty and unstoppable stealth Sentinels. For the most part, seeing them mentored by Rogue, Gambit, Jubilee, Nightcrawler, and Wolverine works well, showing them as true teachers for this new generation of mutants. While introducing a new batch of young mutants has been done before, Gail Simone makes the most of it by adding fresh layers of concepts that elevate The Outliers as breakout characters without relegating them to the background. It’s only a matter of time before they get their series. This issue demonstrates why Uncanny is the best of the X-titles post-Krakoa, and thanks to the brilliance of this issue, that will never change.
Well, that’s it for me. Thanks for sticking around and I look forward to seeing you all next time.
