Amazing Spider-Man # 65 Deaths – The 8 Deaths of Spider-Man arc takes a slight detour with this tie-in as it focuses on Phil Coulson, who is currently the embodiment of Death in the Marvel Universe. Yes, it dives into Coulson’s backstory of how he became Death and why the original iteration chose him for that role. Still, it ends up providing the lamest answer ever (**NO SPOILERS**) to where it doesn’t make Coulson look good nor is there anything special about his new role that makes this a standout issue for this particular arc but the one saving grace within the pages of this issue is a recap of some of Spider-Man’s history that covers the many losses he’s had to deal with in his life which at least helps in making this a true “8 Deaths of Spider-Man” interlude. Still, unfortunately, it succeeds in making Coulson a less-than-important figure who does not stand out in the least, so with that said, this is an intermission that is flat-out forgettable, and hoping that we can get to the next chapter of this arc.

Ultimate Wolverine #1 – The Ultimate Wolverine is the Winter Soldier from a group called The Eurasian Republic, which includes Colossus, Magik, and Kitty Pryde. This outfit experiments with mutants, and this is one of the bloodiest and most violent Wolverine stories to come out of Marvel. Thanks to the herculean efforts of both writer Chris Condon and artist Alessandro Cappuccio (who is doing his best work outside of Moon Knight), we have a fresh take on Logan that doesn’t rely on the usual “rinse and repeat” factor of revisiting the Weapon X program or his time in Alpha Flight. This makes the new iteration more enjoyable, while also subtly hinting at his past without revealing too much at once. It creates a compelling narrative that never tarnishes Wolverine in any way. The portrayal of him as a brutal killer is intriguing, leaving us eager to see what comes next for the Ultimate Wolverine.

Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man #2 – Two issues in, and this series is a fantastic way to excite fans for the upcoming Disney+ show. Since everyone knows the origin story, it’s refreshing to see this series sidestep that and focus on Peter Parker’s earlier days as Spider-Man with a modern twist. The classic elements of humor, drama, and action are represented here with precision and respect for the Silver Age stories that inspired them. It captivates with each page, from Peter inventing the earlier versions of his web shooters to facing off against The Enforcers, setting the scene for the next issue. Well-executed with the right amount of fun, Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man is a refreshing superhero story that reinvents Spider-Man for a new generation. With the show on the horizon, a series like this one will definitely make anyone a Spider-Man fan.

Well, that’s it for me this week. Thanks for sticking around and I look forward to seeing you all next time.
