Absolute Batman # 1– While Marvel has always succeeded in reinventing their characters via The Ultimate Universe, DC tends to come up short when it comes to catching up to Marvel with their attempts (*ahem* Earth One and The New 52) but with their All-In initiative already rolling out, things are beginning to look brighter for DC especially when you take into consideration this grittier relaunch of the Dark Knight has exceeded expectations as well as marking the return of Scott Snyder back to Batman on a full-basis where this Gotham City is a completely different version not to mention moving away from the Bruce Wayne as a millionaire playboy routine in favor of a more blue-collared version (Bruce is a civil engineer) that is firing on all cylinders. The story itself takes a ruthless approach to its storytelling that works well while honoring all of the classic elements that make Batman unique, such as his origin story getting an update and most of his villains getting their humble beginnings as acquaintances of Bruce Wayne and seeing Alfred Pennyworth reimagined as an M16 agent is just brilliant mainly because it leans on the moody aspects of this new interpretation of the character while seeing a Batman who can match anyone brutality with his own (His axe is just mind-blowingly astounding!); Bottom Line is both Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta have delivered a Batman series that fans old and new can enjoy even if the old fans have to find their way to accepting some of the latest components that are presented in this issue; With that said it would be interesting to see what comes next, especially after the last page (**NO SPOILERS**); With a more realistic setting in place, this series makes it great to be a Batman fan more than ever.

Action Comics # 1070– WOW!! This issue delivers a classic Superman story, especially when Mark Waid’s writing pulls out all the stops and never lets up. The main feature finds a weird human/creature hybrid breaking out of the Phantom Zone that sets up a great Superman/Supergirl team-up that is, without a doubt, sensation; I do, however, like how Jimmy Olsen was thrown in the mix that, in turn, make this a mesmerizing story full of intrigue and wonder while giving us another way of showing the readers how the Phantom Zone can be dangerous but shines a light on the forgotten elements in Krypton’s history. The second feature of Supergirl is also entertaining, but it looks as if Mariko Tamaki is more than willing to stretch out this mystery until the very end. This is a fantastic issue that shows why Action Comics will always be the iconic title for DC.

Day of the Dead Girl # 1– This new series blends magic and mystery with a strong sense of family elements, making this an entertaining read. Coroner Sam Castillo will learn this the hard way when a supernatural serial killer targets her hometown just as she moves back in with her spiritual mother, Ana, a leader of a witch coven specializing in Brujeria. But when the coven’s Brujas start turning up murdered, Sam and Ana must work together to find the killer and save their town’s Day of the Dead festival from turning into an occult bloodbath. Written by the team of AJ Mendez (fka “AJ Lee”) and Aimee Garcia, this series offers a bright yet chilling insight into the mother/daughter dynamic that delivers big time on the character arcs, but the horror part of this debut issue comes within the last few pages (**NO SPOILERS**); Don’t expect any CW-esque drama or plot twist but a well-written story that respects Mexican culture without resorting to any harmful stereotypes and I should point out that The Dia de Muertos festival looks amazing thanks in part to Belen Culebras’ stunning artwork (She’s a star in the making). Instead, it’s used as a backdrop for the tension between Sam and her mother regarding the ideologies of both supernatural and science, which strengthens the plot but never comes off as overwhelming. Mendez and Garcia make a compelling writing team where they may have given us one of the most captivating supernatural stories to date that don’t piggyback on what’s come before but offer an innovative tale that will be talked about for years.

Sentinels # 1– Imagine if we were to get a title that was basically the X-Men version of “Suicide Squad”- It would be Sentinels! While this is not the most original and innovative concept to come out of the “From The Ashes” reboot, it does have some promise that could intrigue even the toughest skeptical, and that’s saying a lot; The Sentinels team itself is made up of various humans who, to get their lives back after being injured by some of the worst events to come out of the Marvel Universe, have subjected themselves to an experimental nanotech procedure only to find themselves as disposable and as I said earlier of how this series has promise? It does, but it struggles to keep them intact mainly because the creative team decided to focus more on style than substance which I hope they will correct in the next issue, but looking past these problems, it’s safe to say that this series is an interesting concept that could be great….but let’s hope that the ideas are fleshed out more.

Well, that’s it for me this week. Thanks for sticking around and I will see you all next time.
