Batman # 144– This issue marks the conclusion of “The Joker: Year One” but after these past few issues, it just felt flat in terms of storytelling while trying to add new layers to The Joker himself. It doesn’t help matters that the arc kept going back and forth to the present and the near future because Chip Zdarsky is a talented writer but this arc did not play to his strengths but weakened them. Instead, Zdarsky feels comfortable taking what other established Batman writers have done and just adding his twist to it which is a shame because he could have brought his voice to the table when he’s crafting his scripts but lately he’s been on cruise control. The artwork, provided by Giuseppe Camuncoli and Andrea Sorrentino felt so uneven that it did this arc no favors (It would have been best if Camuncoli handled the art chores); Overall, there’s nothing to get excited about this arc other than you read it and finished it in one sitting, but had Zdarsky added his flair to this story it would have been dynamic but let’s hope that Zdarksy can get his creative spark back before it’s too late.

Elvira Meets H.P. Lovecraft # 1 -Dynamite Entertainment always does right by Elvira and her large fanbase by putting out such remarkable stories. This one is no exception as she teams up with H.P. Lovecraft who needs her help to find something to stop the emergence of the Old Ones as well as prevent the return of Cthulhu; The story itself blends humor and horror with such ease but seeing H.P. Lovecraft being cast as an uptight curmudgeon takes the entertainment factor up a notch while addressing how much he thinks of himself during his lifetime; Writer David Avallone finds a way to make this unique team-up interesting in a way that will appease Elvia fans and once again, showing how iconic the Mistress of the Dark is after all these years.

Green Lantern # 87 (Facsimile Edition)- The first appearance of John Stewart is still one of the most memorable GL stories to date. It helps that both Dennis O’Neil and Neal Adams were crafting such groundbreaking stories that took both GL and Green Arrow away from their Silver Age surroundings so this is an issue anyone should have in their collection, facsimile or not.

Ultimate Spider-Man # 2– The first issue of this series set an all-time high in terms of taking some of the most recognizable elements in Spider-Man history and doing something new with them so thankfully, this issue continues that trend and the results are just amazing; Seeing Peter Parker get the hang of being a superhero while getting duped twice by the newest incarnation of the Shocker (Who comes off as a better version of the original era of the Ultimate Universe I might add) is evidence that Jonathan Hickman’s writing continues to be dynamic when it comes to adding a fresh spin on Spidey’s world that is brilliant and filled with awe; It’s the Spider-Man titles that Marvel fans have been asking for and this new era is shining brighter than ever.

Well, that’s it for me this week. Thanks for sticking around and I will see you all next time.
