Amazing Spider-Man # 51– With Kindred turning Spider-Man’s world upside down, it looks like Spidey has to get some assistance from Dr. Strange and I enjoyed the tension that these two iconic characters had instead of it turning into another team-up story; Also, the addition of The Black Cat was a very nice touch from Nick Spencer and Patrick Gleason (Gleason’s artwork really shines in this issue as he really captures the dark and moody vibe from Spencer’s script); The use of The Hand of Vishanti that Spidey uses to get to the bottom of Kindred was also cool (And it’s a very excellent callback to the J. Michael Stracyznski/John Romita Jr. run of ASM); If you’re not reading ASM then you really should because of the same old formula of Spidey taking out the villain of the month plot, this series is going in a bold new direction that anyone will enjoy…..even if you’re not a Spider-Man fan.
Batman Beyond # 48– Even though this title’s ending due to DC’s decision to cut back on some of their titles, I really like the new arc that features Terry McGinnis teaming up with Booster Gold and as it turns out, a “time bomb” has gone off in Bruce Wayne’s mind, causing him to attack Terry so when Booster shows up, the two of them go back to 2020 to make sure that never happens but along the way, they encounter Blanque, a former member of the Superman Revenge Squad who instantly attacks both Terry and Booster. Now I definitely enjoyed the whole time-travel aspect as I don’t feel like it’s been done before in this title or it hasn’t reached its full potential but Dan Jurgens has made it flawless so it doesn’t feel like a case of deja-vu and Paul Pelletier’s art is still stunning as usual so with this kind of momentum that Batman Beyond has going for it at the moment, it would be great if DC gave this series another lifeline and fast.
Batman: Three Jokers # 3– From Batman confronting Joe Chill who’s remorseful over killing his parents (Thus giving birth to The Dark Knight) to Jason Todd (Red Hood) pouring his heart out to Barbara Gordon (Batgirl) via a “Dear John” letter, I was extremely impressed by how great this story is and how the ending was very satisfying (**NO SPOILERS**); So for fans of the Batman/Joker feud, this series will not disappoint.
Canto II: The Hollow Men # 3– Canto really is the hero we deserve in these times. His heroic nature and optimism will really capture the hearts of the readers as Canto and his group of friend continue their quest to lift the curse that causes their clocks to stop and the story itself is very entertaining so if I can be bold, this is by far one of the most acclaim series that IDW has put out and we’re all thankful for that.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin # 1– After being pushed back about three times (Probably due to COVID) this series has arrived and I have to say…….I was BLOWN AWAY by how awesome this story was as a lone Turtle who seeking justice for his fallen family in an unrecognizable future and what’s really great is how great Kevin Eastman, Peter Laird, and Tom Waltz crafted a story that looks to pay homage to Frank Miller’s “The Dark Knight Returns” but also find a way to take the premise and make it fresh and exciting, plus Eastman’s layouts along with inks supplied by Easu and Issac Escorza are very dynamic to where it makes Frank Miller’s artwork look very amateurish. So with that said, “The Last Ronin” will have every TMNT fan in awe for this series.
Well, that’s not for me this week. I’ll be back next week so thanks for sticking around and I’ll see you next time.
