2009 Crimespree Award winner Christa Faust and Novelist Gary Phillips team up to provide a modern take on the Crime Noir genre. Set in Times Square back in the notorious 1980’s when it was the home of New York’s red light district. Sex shops, adult cinemas and strip clubs lined the streets. We follow Roxy Bell, a peepshow booth performer, as she is dragged into the story when a VHS tape is dropped off in her booth, seemingly at random. What follows is a compeling crime story with a slew of supporting characters in this first installment.
Art by Andrea Camerini is sharp and crisp with well rendered characters and city scapes. “Camera” angles on the panels are cinemesque and really make the story visuals pop. Great colouring by Marco Lesko add a lot of depth. Really a well drawn book.
Some adult content and language as you would expect from the setting and comic’s genre so not for the little ones but also not gratuitous or exploitive. I will definitley be looking for this as a collected volume as it seems like one of those stories best consumed in one sitting.
