The “Hard Case Crime” series from Titan Comics has been a guilty pleasure of mine for quite some time now with books like Peepland and The Girl Who Handcuffed Houdini scratching that pulp crime itch that pops up from time to time. The newest title in the line is Gun Honey, written by Charles Ardai and drawn by And Her Kheng, which focuses on beautiful and talented gun smuggler Joanna Tan who is also called, you guessed it, Gun Honey.
When a past job and its end results catch up to her, Joanna has a tough choice to make; work for the government or keep going as an independent contractor. Here next mission seems straightforward enough but if there is one thing you can count on with a book in the Hard Case Files line of comics is that everything is not what it seems and a double cross is probably just around the corner.
For a first issue there is a lot to cram into the story and Charles does a good job keeping the story moving without getting to exposition or text box heavy. Ang Hor Kheng, who I am not familiar with, does a very good job with the visuals. Joanna is properly sexy without being silly about it, her characters look natural and the action has a grace to it that makes it easy to follow. Its a good pairing of creative talent and I am looking forward to where the rest of the story takes us, it has a lot to live up to after this stellar debut issue.
