FANTASTIC COMICS FAN: Kickstarters

It’s time again for another chance to back some of the most fantastic campaigns out there. I’ve covered all of them before, and they are all worth checking out. With all the upheavals in the comic book industry—campaigns are one unique way to support indie publishers.

First up: G-Man Comics, who—like clockwork put pit campaigns in August and February. It began back in 2019 and was founded by Rik Offenberger, Jim Burrows & Eric N. Bennett. Since then, their universe has grown to nearly seventy comics.

“The Agent” chronicles the adventures of FBI Agent Simon N. Kirby within the universe of G-Man Comics, where all superheroes are registered with the government. I don’t think it’s anything like Marvel has done because it takes a fresh spin on everything you think about heroes. Heroes are sent on missionsthat Simon N. Kirby leads in a Mission Impossible fashion.

Superheroes have been around for decades, and sometimes, they feel like they have “been, there, done that.” Not with G-Man Comics! What makes a big difference here is that the creators involved genuinely love what they do, and it helps spin that fresh approach. You get a feel for some of Kirby and Archie’s Mighty Crusaders—and just plain fun- and something is missing in a lot of comics these days. Another plus: these are all-agescomics!

Wait, there’s more! You don’t get one comic, six fantastic books to pick from—or get all of them! There are many options to back the campaign. Other issues available—to name a few– arethe G-Man United, Lynx, and Sgt. Flag. When you check out the campaign—head over to the official G-Man Website. You’ll find tons of background information and even a shop for G-Man merchandise.

Laurie Calcaterra is back with the latest Path of the Pale Rider.Follow Jude St. Clair through the apocalypse as he tries to survive long enough to find the answer to why the dead no longer die: Death is Broken. It’s like those Spaghetti Westernswith an apocalyptic twist. If you enjoy the Book of Eli, Mad Max, and I AM Legend—this is something to check out. It’s different than you might expect, and I thoroughly enjoyed each issue.

I give Laurie credit: she’s done over a half dozen campaigns and is always out there promoting her projects. She even has a dedicated Facegroup group for the Pale Rider:

Be warned—not that there is anything wrong—it does containsome gore, and it’s more for an adult audience. But won’t let that stop you! It’s a fantastic read! You can also check out the first four issues on Global Comix. Please do: I’m reasonablysure you’ll like what you see and want to head over to the campaign.

I have to give a shot to artist Marco Defillo, who provides the pencils and inks. His art for the series barely scratches the surface of his talent. His work here fits perfectly with Laurie’s story, but I’ve looked around, and he is exceptionally talented. I’ve seen his Flash and Wonder Woman art and love his style. He’s one creator to keep an eye on, and the Path series is perfect to watch a rising star.

Over the last few years, Jon Dexter has done nearly a dozen campaigns and has created several comic book projects (like Dime Store Detective), but my favorite has always been Alpha Dogs. It’s something truly unique and different than what you usually find in any comic book. I also know that Jon has a considerable affinity for dogs and that love definitely filtersthroughout the series.

The premise is simple: The comic introduces Buck, a formidable canine endowed with extraordinary healing abilities, superior intelligence, and remarkable strength. Despite facing public fear and prejudice due to his breed and size, Buck is unwavering in his mission to safeguard his loved ones and defend both humans and animals in peril.

Buck, along with his owner Ina and a grumpy old pit bull who shares in Buck’s powers, have spent most of their lives on the run from Black Rock, a cabal of mercenaries obsessed with exploiting the dogs’ abilities.

Buck, together with his owner Ina and a cantankerous old pit bull who shares Buck’s extraordinary powers, have spent the majority of their lives evading Black Rock—a relentless cabal of mercenaries fixated on harnessing the dogs’ unique abilities for their nefarious purposes.

Here, we get the fifth issue of Alpha Dogs—the halfway mark of the first story arc. If you missed the first four issues, there is a pledge that will allow you to get those four books. This is something I do recommend because there is nothing like this comic out there!

Quick shoutout to the artist Fernando Melek, who makes Jon’s story shine. I mean—come on… a comic about dogs? At first, it might be something one might pass up, but the combination of these two does make—again—for a comic that is like nothing else you’ll find out there. Alpha Dogs is one of my favorite indie projects out there, and I hope you will check it out.
