Kickstart your weekend by checking out some fantastic Kickstarters! Comic shops aren’t the only place to find fantastic reads, and we all need to look to support creators. Dig into their campaigns because you’ll find links to their social media and links to some of their other fantastic projects outside of their current campaigns. And, while you’re there, browse around—you might just find something else to buy!
Mega Maiden: Welcome Home! #1-2—now, here’s something I like where creators mix things up! Power Wave Comics, created by Andeh Pinkard, combines anime, pink rock, anime, and superhero action comedy. He’s been making comics for over twenty-five years, and I can’t believe I’ve never heard of him! What comics need more today is fun and innovative comics, and this project delivers that. Thankfully, the campaign has links to his other projects because this is one fantastic creator I want to check out more of!
Need a break from the superhero comics? Got just the project for you! @alifornia, Inc. is written by Arthur N. Ebuen, who started as an animator on Futuraama and the Simpson’s. The artist is Dave Law, who is involved in the ongoing sci-fi space opera The Space Odditorium. The two combined make for a fantastic project! The premise is that, sometime shortly, California has broken away from the United States. It becomes its own country that is run like a corporation—who, like all Big Business, answers to a corporate board. And, like all big business, it’s not just profits but growth.
It’s 2047, 18 years after ©alifornia seceded from the United States. After creating a new freshwater source to ensure independence, ©alifornia’s borders are closed, and it supplies 80% of North America’s produce. With Silicon Valley, high-tech is the largest source of revenue, their massive military presence is now privatized, and Hollywood PR continues to shape the world in its image. All citizens are employees of ©alifornia, Inc. and live the ideal ©alifornian life: surf, sun, and gluten-free. However, as employees live on company property, certain privacy rights are waived. With CCTV on every corner, ©alifornia is little more than a totalitarian state masquerading as a utopia, and no one is bigger than the brand, even the top brass. That’s only the tip of the so-called iceberg! There’s fantastic world-building and uniquely fascinating charters. One strong point: this campaign also marks the end of the story.

Here’s the premise: ShowTime and Tey Diggz meet a ghost-like entity that takes them on a crazy ride in their hometown of BROOK-CITY. Suppose you like comedy in the vein of Family Guy, The Boondocks, and even The Power Rangers. In that case, this is something you should check out from the creative team of Dwayne Robinson, Jr. and Terrence Young, who previously put together two action-horror comics called Nightfall and Salvation. This time around, they wanted to try something different, and from what I can see, it looks fantastic and fun!
