*Nothing much to spoil..
The world’s first 3D Treasury-sized edition features two brand-new horrifying stories of the FTL crew! Glorious 10 x 13 pages in full color 3D and a special “Wink” B cover! (Two different images on the same cover, one per glasses color!)
This is one you do not want to miss!
So, I just finished Faster Than Light 3D #1, and it’s a mixed bag for me. The storytelling? That’s definitely the strong point here. The two stories in this issue give off a vibe that’s like a modern twist on classic sci-fi tales from the EC era, like Weird Fantasy and Incredible Science Fiction and maybe even a little bit of the old The Outer Limits TV show. They’ve got that blend of adventure and weirdness that I’m all for, and both David Hine and Brian Haberlin deliver great work on both the writing and art.
Where it goes downhill, though, is in the 3D. Some panels pull it off, and when they do, they’re pretty striking. But way too often, the 3D effect looks blurry, especially on faces, it just misses the mark. I even tried switching to another pair of 3D glasses that I ended up ordering online to rule out any issues on my end, but nope – the issue was still there.
Given that I read this for the 3D experience, it was a letdown to have the visuals fall short. It’s odd, especially since other 3D comics I’ve read didn’t have these issues, which makes me wonder if there’s a printing problem here. The book has an intriguing setup with a 10×13 size layout and promises a unique cover that changes with the glasses, but without consistent quality on the 3D, it doesn’t quite deliver.
Bottom line: If you’re here for sci-fi stories with a throwback style, you might enjoy it. Just don’t expect the 3D feature to hit the way you’d hope.
