(BALTIMORE, MD) — (August 20, 2021) — Mutantkind’s best and brightest band together to defend the world in Gerry Duggan and Pepe Larraz’s X-Men #1 from Marvel Comics, the best-selling comic book of July 2021 through Diamond Comic Distributors, the world’s largest distributor of comics, graphic novels, and pop culture merchandise.
JULY’S COMIC BOOKS
Marvel Comics had eight titles among Diamond’s most distributed comics in July including Jed MacKay and Alessandro Cappuccio’s Moon Knight #1 (#2); Phillip Kennedy Johnson and Manuel Garcia’s Extreme Carnage Alpha #1 (#3); Nick Spencer and Mark Bagley’s Sinister War #1 (#4), kicking off an epic Spider-Man storyline; Charles Soule and Luke Ross’s Star Wars: War of the Bounty Hunters #2 (#7); Cavan Scott and Georges Jeanty’s Star Wars: The High Republic #7 (#8); Justina Ireland and Luca Pizarri’s Star Wars: War of the Bounty Hunters—Jabba the Hutt #1 (#9), a one-shot tying into the crossover event; and Spencer and Federico Vicentini’s Amazing Spider-Man #71 (#10), a tie-in to the Sinister War event.
Image Comics had two titles in the top ten. M.O.M.: Mother of Madness #1, an over-the-top superhero comedy from Game of Thrones superstar Emilia Clarke, cowriter Marguerite Bennett, and artist Leila Leiz, was their top book for July at #5. Also in the top ten, Robert Kirkman’s Skybound X #1, an anthology comic that celebrates a decade of Kirkman’s Skybound imprint, ranked #6.
Keanu Reeves, Matt Kindt, and Ron Garney’s BRZRKR #4 was BOOM! Studios’ top book for the month at #12. A prequel to the new Netflix series, Dark Horse Comics’ Masters of the Universe: Revelation #1 charted at #36. IDW Publishing’s top book for the July, Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures #6, ranked #78. Jimmy Palmiotti, Amanda Conner, and Moritat’s The Invincible Red Sonja #3 was Dynamite Entertainment’s best-selling comic at #86.
JULY’S GRAPHIC NOVELS
Set four thousand years before the era of Luke Skywalker, Marvel Comics’ Star Wars: The Old Republic Omnibus Volume 1, collecting the Dark Horse Comics series Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic by John Jackson Miller and Brian Ching, was July’s best-selling graphic novel.
Other Marvel Comics titles among the top ten include Mighty Marvel Masterworks: Fantastic Four Volume 1, collecting the first ten issues of Fantastic Four by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby (#3); Mark Waid and Javier Rodriguez’s History of the Marvel Universe (#5); J. Michael Straczynski and Olivier Coipel’s Loki: Mistress of Mischief (#6); Peter David and Greg Land’s Symbiote Spider-Man: King in Black (#9); and the Savage Sword of Conan: The Original Marvel Years Omnibus Volume 5 (#10).
Image Comics had two titles among July’s top ten: Fire Power by Kirkman & Samnee Volume 3, collecting the third arc of Robert Kirkman and Chris Samnee’s martial arts series, ranked #2; and Kirkman and Ryan Ottley’s Invincible Compendium Volume 1, collecting the series that inspired by Amazon Prime animated series, ranked #4.
Also in the top ten, VIZ Media’s My Hero Academia: Vigilantes Volume 10 ranked #7 and Dark Horse Comics’ original graphic novel Avatar: The Last Airbender—Suki, Alone ranked #8.
Among the premier publishers, BOOM! Studios’ top book was Once & Future Volume 3 at #21; IDW Publishing’s Batman/The Maxx: Arkham Dreams ranked #41; and Dynamite Entertainment’s The Boys Omnibus Volume 1 ranked #166.
JULY’S BOOKS, TOYS & GAMES
The 51st volume of Gemstone Publishing’s The Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide was July’s best-selling book through Diamond; the softcover edition topped the chart, and the hardcover edition ranked #2.
Playmates’ Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Retro Rotocast Villains Mutant Module Figure Set, a PREVIEWS Exclusive box set of the TMNT villians inspired by the classic 1980s figures, was July’s best-selling toy product. Other Turtles products from Playmates in the top ten include the PREVIEWS Exclusive Retro Rotocast Sewer Lair Figure Set (#2) and the Ninja Elite Series Black & White Set (#3), a special release for Free Comic Book Day.
Funko’s PREVIEWS Exclusive release, the POP! DC Heroes: White Knight Batman/The Joker Vinyl Figure 2-Pack, a San Diego Comic Con exclusive based on Sean Murphy’s DC Comics series Batman: White Knight, ranked #4.
Diamond Select Toys had two products among July’s top ten toys; the Godzilla Gallery: King Ghidorah (1991) Deluxe PVC Figure ranked #6 and the Marvel Gallery: Storm (Comic) PVC Statue ranked #10.
Wizards of the Coast’s Magic the Gathering Trading Card Game: Modern Horizons 2 Collector Booster Packs was July’s best-selling game product. Other Modern Horizons 2 products in the top ten include the Set Boosters (#2) and the Draft Boosters (#7).

Ranking is calculated based upon orders for comic books, graphic novels, toys and games invoiced and shipped to Diamond customers during any given month, which comprises pre-orders, advance reorders, and reorders, minus any products that are received back from a title marked as returnable. Please note that products marked with an asterisk (*) have had their reported quantities reduced due to retailer returnability, and thus may rank lower on the charts than their actual sales would reflect.
