Dave Dwonch talks about PROM OF THE DEAD

Dave Dwonch latest project Spores is on Kickstarter now! It is his first foray into the horror genre. He played a bit with it in Cyrus Perkins and the Haunted Taxi Cab, but this is his first R-rated attempt!

First Comics News: Is Prom of the Dead a complete story of a first chapter?

Dave Dwonch: Prom is definitely a complete story, but it does open the world up to more.

1^st: How are the Spore Zombies different than traditional zombies?

Dave: Spores zombies are inspired by Ophiocordyceps Unilateralis, the “zombie fungus” found in rainforests, so the story is a bit more well explained than most outbreak books.

1^st: Most of your work has been in conjunction with Action Lab, why self-publish Spores?

Dave: I’m looking to self-publish to get back to my roots. There are a lot of moving parts to making comics and I wanted full control. For me, that means going “straight to trade” which isn’t something a lot of US companies do.

1^st: What is Ophiocordyceps Unilateralis?

Dave: Spore zombies are slaves to a hive mind. They don’t necessarily want to kill their victims, but to assimilate them. Think of them as organic Borgs.

1^st: Why does this hit Pineview Academy?

Dave: The Pineview Academy is ground zero for this first arc, but it’s not an isolated event. In future volumes, we’ll see the effect of the outbreak across the world.

1^st: How much do Kickstarter backers have to pledge to get a PDF of the comic?

Dave: It’s $15 for the digital version.

1^st: What is the minimum Kickstarter pledge to get a print copy?

Dave: $20 for the print copy.

1^st: What other incentives do you have planned?

Dave: We’re doing something different with this crowdfund. The goal is to cover printing on the OGN, we’re also offering a #1 first issue just for Kickstarter backers. We know fans LOVE floppies and wanted to do something unique for them. We also have shirts, and tiers where fans can get drawn in the book, but for the most part, it’s about the actual book.

1^st: What makes Prom of the Dead so cool no Zombie fan should miss it?

Dave: Well, fans of my work know that I love twisting genres. I think that Prom will surprise people. Prom of the Dead will leave you questioning whether you even just read a zombie story. It’s going to b a roller coaster ride for sure!
