A Crimson Dream
I’d been a fan of Ben’s Warrior Nun series from the start. I enjoyed the imagination behind it utilizing the classic good versus evil narrative to high fantasy elements. What I wasn’t prepared for was his debut of a 1930s version in the form of a gun-blasting hero in a habit; the Crimson Nun. Having been a long-time fan of the classic pulps, ala the Shadow, Doc Savage, and all the other Depression-era fictional heroes, it was easy to see Sister Alicia Smith was cast from the same mold. She ran through the initial four-issue mini and then was gone. For years I wondered what I could do with that concept were I lucky to get my hands on it. Some dreams take a little longer to realize and two years ago Ben and I finally hooked up at a small Colorado comic con. That we hit it off was no surprise and I didn’t waste any time bringing up my desire to write a Crimson Nun adventure. To my total delight, Ben simply smiled and said, “Sure. Do it.”
And so, after some thirty years, I’m writing a brand new Crimson Nun story managing to contain my over-bubbling enthusiasm to contain all the ideas erupting in my head like kernels of popcorn. Along the way, I convinced artist Jesse Thomas to join me in this grand adventure and super letterer Mike Belcher. We think we’ve got something special here and we hope you’ll agree. After all, we really can’t do this without you. So ahead of time, thanks. And God bless you.
