Comic Book Cats, number 85: Batman Returns: The Official Comic Adaptation, penciled by Steve Erwin, inked by Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez, written by Denny O’Neil, lettered by John Costanza and colored by Tom McGraw, published by DC Comics in June 1992.
From the adaptation of the Tim Burton movie Batman Retruns, here’s the scene where Selina Kyle (Michelle Pfeiffer), having been pushed out the window by her ruthless boss Max Shreck (Christopher Walken), is brought back to life by the stray cats in the alley, leading to her transformation into Catwoman.
Penciling this adaptation is Steve Erwin, who did regular work for DC Comics from the late 1980s to the mid 1990s. Among his numerous credits were Checkmate, Deathstroke, Gunfire, New Titans and Star Trek. Erwin is one of those pencilers who I like to refer to as a good solid artist, not flashy, but always turning in a clear, professional job. Erwin subsequently contributed to a line of hardcover historical graphic novels for children, and worked as a product designer.
Inks are provided by the legendary Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez, whose work we saw in a previous Comic Book Cats entry. I think a lot of Garcia-Lopez’s style comes through here. It’s a nice collaboration, Erwin’s storytelling and JLGL’s embellishments.
