Comic Book Cats, number 82: Smash Comics #76

Comic Book Cats, number 82: Smash Comics #76, cover drawn by Alex Kotzky, published by Quality Comics in September 1943.

Here’s another comic book cat courtesy of Pappy’s Golden Age Comics Blogzine. Midnight is about as blatant a knock-off of Will Eisner’s The Spirit as you are ever likely to find. In fact, at first glance, I thought that *was* The Spirit on this cover. Nevertheless, this is a very well drawn cover by Alex Kotzky, featuring Midnight along with a very striking cat.

Kotzky also worked on several other Quality Comics titles, among them Blackhawk and Plastic Man throughout the 1940s and early 50s. Beginning in 1961 Kotzky drew the newspaper comic strip Apartment 3-G, which ran until 2015. Kotzky illustrated Apartment 3-G for over three and a half decades, and his work on it is well-regarded. He passed away in 1996 at the age of 73.

The story inside Smash Comics #76, “Twelve Hours To Live,” is drawn by Paul Gustavson. It features a cat-obsessed criminal who seeks revenge for the deaths of his bellowed kittens Tillie and Millie. I would showcase art from the story… but Gustavson, an otherwise fine Golden Age artist, draws cats that look much more like dogs! You can see this for yourself courtesy of the Blogzine…
