Comic Book Cats, number 75: We3 #3

Comic Book Cats, number 75: We3 #3, penciled by Frank Quitely, inked & colored by Jamie Grant, written by Grant Morrison and lettered by Todd Klein, published by Vertigo / DC Comics in March 2005.

We3 was a three-issue miniseries about a United States government project to create cyborg soldiers using domestic animals. Three of the altered animals, a dog, a cat, and a rabbit, eventually escape and are pursued by military forces intent on destroying them.

We3 is genuinely sad, downbeat story, one where human beings are the real monsters, and the animals are the victims, seeking only their freedom from cruelty and imprisonment. Grant Morrison ultimately concludes the narrative on a bittersweet note.

On this splash page, we see Tinker, the ginger-striped cat, leaping into action to save Bandit the dog during the military’s attack. Frank Quitely & Jamie Grant do a good job of rendering Tinker and the other two animal protagonists as simultaneously frightening, sympathetic, and tragic.
