Comic Book Cats, number 185: Pickles by Brian Crane, published on December 6, 2012 and December 20, 2012.
Pickles is a daily comic strip featuring a retired couple, Earl and Opal Pickles, their family, and their pets, Muffin the cat and Roscoe the dog, that has been running since April 1990. Here are a couple of strips from 2012 featuring Muffin. My fellow cat owners will no doubt identify with the difficulty in folding clean laundry when a cat is around, or the dangers of putting up a Christmas tree when there’s a cat in the house!
Brian Crane was born in Twin Falls, Idaho in 1949 and grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area. He began drawing at an early age and hoped to grow up to be a comic strip artist. As Brian got older he didn’t think he had the writing talent or sense of humor to be able to come up with material for a daily comic strip, and became a graphic designer and art director. However, when Brian got near the age of forty he began reminiscing about his childhood dream of doing a newspaper comic strip, and so he created Pickles, basing Earl and Opal on his wife Diana’s parents. Currently the strip runs in over 1000 newspapers around the world.
