Scary Christmas is an anthology of three holiday-themed horror stories. The first of these, “The Prowler in the Woods,” involves Jólakötturinn, the Christmas Cat of Iceland. The legend goes that Jólakötturinn, a gigantic, ferocious cat, prowls the countryside, devouring anyone who is not wearing new winter clothing. The myth obviously dates back to a pre-industrial time centuries ago when the majority of people made their own clothing. It was intended to scare little children, a warning to them that anyone who was lazy would get eaten by Jólakötturinn.
“The Prowler in the Woods” is set in an orphanage where Vandercoot, the cruel director, has all of the orphans slaving away in a basement sweatshop making clothing. Timmy is sent down to the basement on Christmas Eve by Vandercoot to sew a winter coat. The only other child in the basement is a creepy little girl name Tindra, who tells Timmy the story of Jólakötturinn. Tinda convinces Timmy that they should flee the orphanage wearing the clothing they have made themselves. Vandercoot catches them and prepares to shoot them, but Tinda calls out loudly that the orphanage director is the only one of them not wearing new winter clothing. And out of the woods pops Jólakötturinn, making quick work of the evil Vandercoot.
Italian artist Carola Borelli has also drawn Star Trek for IDW, Love University for Evoluzione Publishing, Destiny, NY for Space Between Entertainment, and OBS: The Devil Went Down To Georgia which was recently funded on Kickstarter.
In 1992 Mike Wolfer created the popular horror / bad girl series Widow, which he continued working on for the next decade. He’s also worked on Gravel and Night of the Living Dead for Avatar Press. More recently he has been writing & drawing covers for The Land That Time Forgot, an ongoing sequel to the Edgar Rice Burroughs novel, from American Mythology Productions.
